Eliminator Controller / Battery question

Hello everyone, I just got a Tyco Eliminator at a thrift store for the low price of 4$. Of course, it doesn't work. It didn't come with a controller but it did have a replaced battery already in it, which was I was able to charge. The battery does seem to work, the red light on the truck bed lit up, however I'm not sure this battery is right as it hardly fits in the battery compartment. I tried a couple of 27Mhz controllers I had from much newer R/Cs and got no response. I'd like to know if I'd need to get a Tyco controller for it to work. And if this replacement battery is even correct for this truck, or if that would need changed as well. I did take it apart and besides it being really dirty I don't see anything obviously wrong. Do these have common faults to look out for? I'm not at all experienced in R/C repair. If you have any tips or tutorials you could point me towards that would be great. I'd like to have this truck working but it's a cool paperweight regardless. Thanks for reading.

First I would see what 27Mhz it is, as there are several of them IE 27.1xx or 27.0xx and so on! same goes for the 49MHZ!

Sorry for the delay. Yes, I suspect your car is probably fine. The batteries were always tight. You need a controller though. I have a page on the controllers here:

Taiyo Controller and Tyco Controller Types from 1970s-2000s

I believe you need the Type L "Chrome with Handle" or Type J1 Pistol Grip, in whatever Mhz is labelled on the car. Other brands unlikely to work, but any Tyco Bandit or other 9.6V car from the era is likely to work. Good luck!
