The Fast Traxx Electric Racing is a slot car track set manufactured by Tyco Industries, and released into the US, UK, and other markets worldwide in 1992.
Concept and Features
Following the phenomenal success of the 1991 Tyco Fast Traxx, a futuristic racing tank-tracked vehicle, Tyco would seek to capitalize further by combining the concept with their traditional core product range of HO scale slot cars.
Given the success of their two other RC car based slot car sets, 1988 Tyco Racin’ Hoppers and 1988 Tyco Racin Bandits, it made complete sense to release one based on the Fast Traxx – but what about the rubber treads?
Vehicles
Though some miracle, they were able to reproduce the Fast Traxx namesake rubber tread system in more-or-less the same way as the original R/C car – and it works! If anything it’s maybe a little slower than regular 440-X2 cars, or perhaps just my imagination. Eitherway, it’s faster than I expected for a tracked system!
The attention to detail is excellent – I especially love the ‘NCC 6207’. This is a salute to the original R/C Fast Traxx. NCC is from the naming convention of Star Trek ships (eg. OG USS Enterprise is NCC 1701), and 6207 is of course the model number of this product. In fact, Tyco / Taiyo almost always hides the model number on their R/C cars somewhere, via a numberplate if it’s a road car, or some other decal to match its theme.
Track Layout
The track is nothing too spectacular, basically a figure 8 with an extra loop, and a hill climb and drop, better than many other tracks at least.
Recommendation
Fast Traxx Electric Racing is just a brilliant, unique slot car set, unlike any other you’ll find on the market either back then, or 30 years later.
The cars are standard HO scale and will function on regular Tyco track, and come complete with little (fake) antennas, chrome ‘Traxx wheels, and of course rubber treads. They’re fast, fun, and like most Tyco toys they continue to last thanks to the good quality construction and attention to detail.
Previously they would appear occasionally on eBay, but according to my records there has’nt been one sold on eBay for over 6 months, and there’s just one for sale at the time of writing. If it’s still for sale, you’ll see it under ‘Available on eBay.
