MODEL REVIEW

This Dickie Ferrari F-40 is a 1:24 scale radio control car manufactured by Taiyo, and released into the German market in 1987. It is the German release of the original Taiyo Ferrari F-40.

There are several Ferrari F-40 models made by Taiyo, however only two are 9.6V Turbo models that we'd recommend.

My personal preference is the Tyco Ferrari F-40 as that's the one that I own and have experience with (see video below), however this model has very similar specifications, just a slightly older design. Most notably the lack of active steering could be a deal killer for some, or no big deal for others.

Design

The Ferrari F-40 looks great, with a deep red gloss and slick black tires with chrome wheels. Nice.

Sadly there's a big "Ferrari!!" sticker on the side which takes a little bit of the class away, but otherwise it's a nice clear model.

The car is smaller than most Taiyo models, only 25cm long by 13cm wide (9in x 5.1in), but don't let its size convince you it's slow. It's not!

Performance

This thing is a little pocket rocket. With 9.6V  8xAA batteries crammed into its tiny chassis, and slick rubber tires, it takes off hard, and will do donuts all day around your living room. With a top speed of 25km/h it's not the fastest Taiyo, but still plenty quick.

The "problem" with older (1986, 1987, maybe 1988) Taiyos is the passive steering, which means the steering servo does'nt work on some models unless you're moving (either forward or back), which can be a pain when navigating small spaces.

Recommendation

If you can get over the passive steering, then you'll love the Dickie Ferrari F40. However if you'd rather not deal with it, then the 1989 Tyco version is for you, and it's... well it's straight up fantastic!
