The Tyco ’57 Chevy ‘Canned Heat’ (also known as Radican) is a radio controlled model manufactured by Taiyo (Japan) and released in the US, UK, and other markets worldwide in 1999.
This was a Special Edition Tyco ‘Canned Heat’, a range of car-in-a-can toys sold by Tyco and Taiyo in the 1990s and early 2000s.
Collectors worldwide
Collecting the Taiyo Radican and Tyco Canned Heat cars is popular in it’s own right, especially in Japan, with some models going for what might seem excessive prices – particularly the Back to the Future cars, and the Knight Rider car.
Most typical Canned Heat cars will sell for around $15-25 USD, however this special edition Chevy ’57 can go for much more than that, currently around $30-45 at the time of writing, but we’ve seen it as high as $150 USD at times.
If you’re a collector, be sure to get one unopened, with its shrink wrap intact. It’s common for there to be minor damage on the shrink wrap ends as it ages, however as long as it’s visibly unopened then its value will remain.
Versions
There are two varieties of the Chevy ’57
- Red with Black Roof ‘Bubbles’ 49Mhz
- Red with White Roof ‘Cola Bottles’ 27Mhz
I believe the model number is the Asst. 96473 on the bottom of the can, though if you have any evidence to the contrary I’d appreciate a comment below!
Recommendation
Collecting Canned Heat and Radican cars remains popular both in the USA, Japan, and across the world as evidenced by the number of sales on eBay which continue.
Of the many cars, my personal favorite is the HotWheels Nascar, and the Radican Back to the Futures, though the ’57 Chevy is also worthwhile having in the collection.
