MODEL REVIEW

The Tyco Micro Wild Thing is a 1/24 scale radio controlled toy manufactured by Taiyo Japan, and released into the US, UK, and Global markets by Tyco RC in 1993.

The 1993 Micro series

Between 1993-1994 Tyco released a series of Micro versions of their most popular and recent ‘full size’ cars, including this Micro Wild Thing. It shared the shelves with several other models.

  • Micro Avenger        #2105-3
  • Micro Scorcher       #2105-3
  • Micro Zombie         #2105-6
  • Micro Fireball         #2105-6
  • Micro Nitro Invader    #2105-1
  • Micro Mutator            #2105-1
  • Micro Wild Thing       #2105-1
  • Micro Bandit              #2105-2

Features and Performance

As a Micro RC car running on 2xAA batteries the performance is not incredible, with the toy being designed for young kids who may see their older sibling’s full size Turbo Hopper Wild Thing, and want the same.

Personally, I’ve been critical of the 1 channel Reverse-Turn design since I was about 10 years old and received one as a present, frustrated that the only way to turn was to reverse, causing the vehicle to turn backwards. It’s a simple mechanical design, where the front wheels are latched on one size, and so by reversing one side pulls back, causing the steering angle to change. Then when driving forward they get pushed back into place, and the car can drive straight.

Not great, but it works, and keeps the price down.

Most notably the quality of the larger Tyco / Taiyo RC cars remains, the only difference is the design.

Recommendation

While I’ve never been a fan of the Micro series, if you have the Full size and Mini versions of these cars, then complementing a collection with the Micro makes sense.
