MODEL REVIEW

The Tyco Turbo Porsche 962 is a radio controlled car manufactured by Taiyo of Japan, and released in the US, UK, and other countries worldwide in 1989.

This model and it’s 1988 predecessor is a simplified version of the Twin Turbo Porsche 962C which is a larger dual-motor monster.

Features and Performance

The 1989 model featured the following upgrades:

  • Modernized chassis, designed to take 9.6v Battery Packs as Taiyo/Tyco sought to increase their revenue streams by requiring purchase of this additional item.
  • A much improved Pistol Grip radio controller.

It shared the following features with earlier models:

  • Slick racing tires
  • Limited rear suspension
  • Full function radio control

The Tyco Porsche 962 was sold in 1988 and 1989, and came in 29Mhz Black/Red versions, and 49Mhz White versions (1988 model 2419 shown)

Recommendation

These single-motor versions of the 962 are simple, lower cost models which still provide plenty of speed and fun indoors, or on a smooth enough surface outdoors.

While they won’t be as valuable as their dual-motor cousins, they’re still beautiful cars with excellent performance, and sure to be part of many 80s kids nostalgia, making them a worthy part of any Tyco / Taiyo collection.
