MODEL REVIEW

The Tyco Porsche 962C Twin Turbo is a radio controlled car manufactured by Taiyo of Japan, and released by Tyco in the US, UK, and other countries worldwide.

Based on the real thing

Based on the real Porsche 962C, a legendary race car from the 1980s designed for endurance racing. Winning numerous races including the 24 Hours of Le Mans, the real car was powered by a turbocharged six-cylinder engine and featured advanced aerodynamics, making it both fast and agile on the track.

Today, the Porsche 962C is regarded as one of the greatest race cars of all time and remains a favorite among motorsports enthusiasts.

Design and aesthetics

When it comes to 80s/90s radio-controlled cars that look as cool as a supercar and have the aggressive performance to back it up, the Tyco Porsche 962 Twin Turbo is definitely at the top of the list.

Manufactured by Taiyo as a western version of the original 1987 Taiyo Porsche 962C Twin Turbo, it was released by Tyco around the same time as the Turbo Hopper but absolutely leaves that and most other cars in the dust, both in terms of performance but also engineering generally.

With its semi-hobby grade chassis, it’s comparable only to the popular Lamborghini Countach Twin Turbo and Super Fight F-1 Twin Turbo only because they all run on the same outstanding road chassis.

Available in a deadly red and black paint job, with gold wheels, or a gold and white ‘Miller’ version, it looks fantastic on any shelf, possibly the best looking Taiyo / Tyco? Must be in Top 5 at least.

Features and Performance

But the Tyco Porsche 962 Twin Turbo isn’t just a pretty face. It also has some serious performance features that made it the stand out best performing RC for the money upon its release, and surely better than anything we’d find at a toy store today.

  • Powered by twin Mabuchi 280 motors that drive the rear wheels
  • Top speed of 31km/h (19mph).
  • Features a rear differential, front wishbone suspension, and rear shock absorbers, providing  excellent handling and stability similar to hobby-grade Tamiyas of the era.
  • Rubber street tires and chrome wheels add to the car’s attractive looks and performance.
  • Ships with Tyco’s best Pistol Grip + Hand Guard controller to emphasise it’s hobby-grade inspiration.
  • Tyco 9.6V Turbo Battery Pack (rechargeable)

It does not get better than this without a brushless conversion!

Recommendation

In a perfect world, everybody could have a super car in their home garage, and just like the real thing, this Tyco Porsche 962 Twin Turbo is so rare, it will have to remain a fantasy for most collectors.

If you see one pop up for sale and you’re wiling to remortgage the house, we say go for it!
